Chapter 116 Helps Stage Quirky Fundraiser

Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 116 of Leominster, Mass., is helping host a quirky annual fundraiser to benefit area veterans facilitated by the city’s Veterans Center.

The event places “Rocky,” a mannequin, on a settee in the middle of frozen Rockwell Pond, and sells guesses as to when he will fall through the ice for $2.50 apiece, or $10 for five. The tradition started in 2012.

“I think people like it because it’s unique,” Director of Veterans Services Richard Voutour told the Sentinel & Enterprise. “When we first put him out, people were calling the fire department.”

When the ice breaks and and Rocky falls into the water, whoever placed the bet closest to the time is declared the winner, receiving half of the money raised. The rest goes to local veterans groups.

The event is “more popular than the mayor,” chapter Vice President Ralph Sacramone said. “Kids drive by with their parents and the kids are all hanging out the window to see Rocky on the pond.”
