Vietnam Veterans of America Big Bend Chapter 96 is realigning and cleaning the tombstones of Vietnam veterans interred at Oakland Cemetery in Tallahassee, Fla., after members noticed that many of the tombstones were in “disarray” when visiting the graves last month.
There are 164 veterans’ graves at the cemetery, where local service members were buried before Tallahassee National Cemetery opened. Nearly all have a 210-lb. marble headstone that will have to be removed and realigned to be uniformly vertical.
The City of Tallahassee is donating materials for the project, and Vet Inc. Tallahassee is supplying labor. The chapter launched work on the project on Feb. 29.
