Chapter 522 Life Member Awarded

David Miller, a life member of Pinellas County, Fla., Chapter 522, was named the Department of Veterans Affairs national Male Volunteer of the Year in April. 

Miller has volunteered for twenty-seven years, primarily at the Bay Pines VA Medical Center. Among other things, he visits patients on a daily basis and helps them with claims and benefits paperwork.

“Due to the fact that Vietnam veterans were ignored and mistreated and misdiagnosed for years after they returned home, I just wanted to make positive experiences to help all veterans and also help them with their issues for health and benefits,” Miller said. “After I was diagnosed with cancer and in a wheelchair for five years, I kept volunteering to not think about my illnesses, as well as to help other veterans with the same problems. This was self-medication for me as well.”
