Chapter 20 Continues Care of Memorial

Chapter 20 members

The 25-year-old Vietnam Veterans Memorial of Greater Rochester, NY in Highland Park continues to be maintained by volunteers and members of Chapter 20

This year’s clean-up crew consisted of 75 volunteers who came together for the Day of Caring to maintain the 2.5-acre park site before Rochester’s annual Lilac Festival. The participants engaged in tasks such as re-mulching and cleaning out weeds.

The unique memorial was spearheaded by Chapter 20 members in mid-1980s. After numerous fundraisers, the memorial was dedicated in September 1996.

The memorial features bollards honoring the 280 men and women from the Rochester area who died in Vietnam, and stones carved with tributes to POW/MIAs, homeless veterans, women in war, and Vietnam veterans who died later as a result of their service in the war, among others. A grove of 3,401 trees honors the nation’s Medal of Honor recipients. There is also an engraved brick walkway from the parking lot to the memorial entrance.
